Research Shows Curry Kills Cancer Cells

The BBC has released an article claiming that an extract in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric can kill cancer cells. The yellow pigment of turmeric, which is called curcumin is thought to be the primary pharmacological agent in turmeric. Curcumin helps the body destroy mutated cancer cells, so they can’t spread through the body.

Studies have linked the frequent use of turmeric to lower rates of breast cancer. Research conducted at the University of Texas suggests that even when breast cancer is already present, curcumin can help to slow the spread of breast cancer cells to the lungs in mice. In this study, published in ‘Biochemical Pharmacology’, human breast cancer cells were injected into mice. After the cells formed into tumors they were removed from the mice, to simulate a mastectomy.

The mice were then divided into four groups. One group received no treatment. Another group was given the cancer drug Taxol, the third group received curcumin and the last group was given both Taxol and curcumin.

After five weeks, 75% of the mice that received Taxol alone and 95% that received no treatment developed lung tumors. But just half of the mice in the curcumin-only group and only 22% of the mice in the curcumin and Taxol group had breast cancer that had spread to the lungs.

Last day of Radiation for Breast Cancer

52 days ago I thought today would never get here. I had already been through so much, a cancer diagnoses, lumpectomy and chemotherapy. My next course of treatment was 38 sessions of radiation. I was scheduled to go Monday through Friday at 7:48am. My insurance is through Kaiser and the location of their treatment center was 45 minutes away. I was not looking forward to battling cancer AND Los Angeles traffic but knew I had no other choice.

Monday July 8, 2009 was my first day of radiation. I pretty much kept to myself the first few days. I noticed there was always a man waiting by the elevator doors. We would say 'hello' or 'goodbye' as I walked by him each time. By the end of the week he learned about my breast cancer and he told me about his fathers voicebox cancer. What a great son to be driving his parents to radiation treatment everyday. His name was Al and we parted with a hug on my tenth day of treatment. Although I was very happy about his dad finishing his radiation I was also sad that I wouldn't see Al's smiling face everyday.

During that second week of radiation I was walking toward my treatment room when I overheard a man talking about the burning he was having on his treatment area. I tried to find him on my way out but he was already gone. The next day I noticed him in the waiting room so I sat down next to him. I reached into my purse and brought out a small bottle of aloe vera gel. "Put this on everyday after your treatment and at night before you go to bed. That is what I have been doing and it seems to be helping me", I said. He smiled and thanked me. We had nice conversations every day for five weeks after that. He knew I was house hunting and one day he brought me a magazine of houses for sell. His name was Mr. Sanajelo and I said goodbye to him almost two weeks ago. He came back last week to say Hi to those of us still in treatment. He was as disappointed as I was that he couldn't say goodbye to Ron.

Ron was a very nice man in his mid-seventies. He had lost all of his siblings to cancer when they were in their 50's. He felt very priviledged and lucky to have dodged cancer until now. The doctors scheduled him to do chemo and radiation at the same time. After his first week of chemotherapy he was put into the hospital due to complications. He was in the hospital for a week. I met him when he returned for radiation. He would show up two hours early for his treatment in hopes that they would call him early one day. They never did. I smiled everyday as I was walking away and I heard him say "she's such a nice young girl". I'm sure the others in the waiting room got sick of hearing it, but I never did.

When Ron was on his second round of chemo he had some awful side effects. I was so proud of him for still making it to his radiation appointments every day. I clapped for him that Friday when I knew it was his last day of chemotherapy. I was so happy for him! He had gotten through it and only had two weeks of radiation left. I told him to have a great weekend and that I would see him on Monday. I never saw him again. Every day I look at his parking spot and see another car parked there. I stare at the empty seat in the waiting room where he always sat and I wonder about him. I hope that where ever he is, he is in a better place. I only wish that I could have said goodbye.

Mrs. Martinelli is an older lady. She had a masectomy a year ago and thought cancer was all behind her. Then in April of this year she discovered another lump in the spot where her breast is suppose to be. Who know you could get breast cancer even after having a masectomy? Two days ago she asked me about my side effects from radiation. I told her that they really weren't so bad. I itched for a week and my skin turned red and that was about it. She showed me a large lump on her arm and told me it hurt when she touched it. She was hoping that I would tell her that was normal. Instead, I told her that when she goes in for her treatment to ask to speak to a doctor. The doctor has scheduled a biopsy on it. I pray that the results will show it is nothing but a cyst.

Today is my last day of radiation. I know that as I have missed others, I will also be missed. Though we are all such different people, cancer has brought us together. In seven and a half weeks I have gotten to know and care about so many people who are going through the same battle as I am. I hope that Mrs. Martinelli bonds with someone else for her last three weeks of treatment. I hope that the other people I have met will finish their treatments without any problem. I hope that those who come after me will never have to look at an empty seat and wonder what happened to their new friend. And as much as I have come care about these people, I hope that we never meet again.

Side Effects From My Chemo Treatment of Taxotere and Cytoxan - My Personal Journal

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January, 2009. I have been tracking my side effects from chemo and posting them to help others that are in the same position as me. The unknown is very scary and so is cancer and chemo. Hopefully reading about my experience will make it less scary.

Treatment #1

Day 1: Full of Energy, Hiccups at night before bed, lasted about 45 minutes.

Day 2: Woke Up Full of Energy, Sleepy by 8 PM, but feel good otherwise.

Day 3: Feel good, head a little foggy

Day 4: Woke up feeling good, energetic, head a little foggy, feeling tired as day goes on.

Day 5: Very tired. Food doesn't have much flavor.

Day 6: Tired. Achy Body, Food doesn't have much flavor.

Day 7: Stomach pains after eating, itchy scalp, itchy back, stomach/back pain at night

Day 8: Stomach pain after eating - but not as bad as yesterday, itchy scalp, itchy back

Day 9: Feel Good

Day 10: Feel Good, started getting sore on tongue. Feels like when you eat too much sugar.

Day 11: Feel Good, tongue still sore. Bought Dr. Katz TheraBreath Oral Rinse & started using 3 times a day

Day 12: Feel Good but woke up with mouth/jaw pain - like I'm wearing a retainer, hair starting to come out?
Tongue feels better.

Day 13: Feel Good, Woke up with mouth/jaw pain again, I'm pretty sure I'm losing more hair than usual.
Tongue sore gone.

Day 14: Feel Good, Hair comes out when I brush it.

Day 15: Feel Good, Hair comes out when I wash it. Received a Nuepogen shot today because of low white
blood cell count

Day 16: Feel OK, throat started hurting in the afternoon, possibly from the shot. Temp of 99.9, Hair is very thin now.

Day 17: Very tired, sore throat, high temp of 101.9, low temp of 99.0 all day. Hair coming out a LOT. Cut it shoulder
length.

Day 18: Temperature back to normal but now have a cough. Looks like I got a minor cold. Hair even thinner today.

Day 19: Still coughing but don't feel too bad. Hair falling out without help of a hand or brush

Day 20: Coughing but feel OK. Hair is soooooo thin. I'm starting to feel self-conscious about it.

Day 21: Coughing but feel OK. The part in my hair is larger than normal. I have a bald spot in the top back of my head.

Treatment #2

Day 22: Full of Energy, have cough from last weeks cold, but feel very good. Shaved my head because
I had big bald spots.

Day 23: Feel Good

Day 24: Feel Good

Day 25: Woke up with a sore throat from acid reflux. Sleepy during the day. Soda tastes different.

Day 26: Tired. Acid reflux - started taking prilosec. Food doesn't have much flavor.

Day 27: Tired, itchy skin & scalp.

Day 28: Feel good, itchy scalp.

Day 29: Insomnia, itchy scalp

Day 30: Feel Good, big appetite

Day 31: Feel Good, Big appetite.

Day 32: Feel Good, dry nose, dry mouth

Day 33: Feel Good, dry nose, dry mouth

Day 34: Feel good, runny nose off/on throughout the day.

Day 35: Feel Good.

Day 36: Feel Good, acid reflux

Day 37: Feel Good, I've noticed I've lost some of my eyelashes but still have all my eye brows.

Day 38: Feel Good

Treatment #3

Day 42: Feel Good, had blood test & it came back great! Had 3rd chemo treatment

Day 43: Feel good after chemo, make spaghetti & meatballs for dinner.

Day 45: Woke up feeling good. Very tired by 6PM. Feel a little nauseous after eating but I haven't gotten sick.
Soda tastes funny. Took my first nausea pill since starting chemo.

Day 46: Woke up feeling good. Chest is red, scalp & arms are itchy. Tired later in day.

Day 47: Felt tired one hour after getting to work. Should have slept in. Heartburn at noon, felt better after eating. Drinking
lemonade is better tasting than soda. Arms are still itchy - Don't scratch! Makes it worse.

Day 48: itchy skin & scalp. Hair hurts, like rubbing the wrong way. Feel full & bloated.

Day 49: Feel more like myself today. Could not sleep. Tossed and turned most the night.

Day 50: Feel good

Day 51: Feel good

Day 52: Feel good, runny nose at times during the day

Day 53: Feel good

Day 54: Feel good

Day 55: Feel good

Day 56: Feel good

Day 57: Feel good

Day 58: Feel good,

Day 59: Feel good, hands are very dry.

Day 60: Feel good, hands are still very dry & cracking. Must put lotion on frequently.

Day 61: Feel good, hands are still dry but seem to be improving.

Day 63: Feel Good, insomnia (I think from the steriods)

Treatment #4

Day 64: First day of my last round of chemo. I started getting stomach pains every 20 minutes. Lasted about 4 hours, until I had a bowel movement. Then the pain eased but did not go completely away. The few hairs I have on my head hurt when you touch them. Like when you rub hair the wrong way.

Day 65: Had stomach pains in the morning but it only lasted about an hour. The hair on my head still hurts to the touch. I feel a little bloated but it could be because I had a big lunch today.

Day 66: I slept in an extra hour today and it seemed to help. I woke up feeling good and was full of energy for about seven hours. After that I seemed to need a half hour nap. I do not have any more stomach pains and my hair feels better today. Today I am having a hard time quenching my thirst. I wish I would have taken my own advice and purchased some lemonade. I've been drinking gatorade and orange juice and they don't seem to be doing the trick.

Day 67: I felt good today.

Day 68: I felt good, again. I notice my taste is starting to go. I have dry mouth and feel like I need to brush my teeth five minutes after I brush them.

Day 69: Woke up feeling good today, but got tired rather easily. My head felt very cloudy throughout the day. I often felt detached. I also feel very bloated after eating or drinking anything.

Day 70: Today I feel a lot better than yesterday. I am feeling more like myself and the cloudiness has gone away. I have a very big appetite and am eating everything on my plate (which is rare for me).

Day 71: Started having stomach pains about an hour after waking up. The pain lasted about an hour and then went away. It wasn't terrible pain but more of a discomfort. I felt very good and full of energy during the rest of the day.

Day 72: Felt good all day

Day 73: Felt good all day

Day 74: Felt good all day

Day 75: Felt good all day.

Day 76: Felt good all day today but noticed that my nose has been running a lot.

Day 77: Feel good today

I was so happy to make it to this day! The time actually went by pretty fast. I feel so lucky that I didn't have any major side effects from the chemo. The next step in my journey is radiation. I will write again soon to let you know how that goes.

Side Effects From My Third Cycle of Treatment of Taxotere and Cytoxan - My Personal Journal

I started my first of four cycles of chemotherapy using the drugs Taxotere and Cytoxan on March 20, 2009. I have been keeping track of the side effects on a daily basis and posting it at the end of each cycle on hopes that it will help others. Please keep in mind that your side effects may not be the same as mine. The days posted below are from my third cycle. You can also view the results from my first cycle and my second cycle.

Day 43:                Feel good after chemo, make spaghetti & meatballs for dinner.

Day 44:                Feel good, full of energy.

Day 45:                Woke up feeling good. Very tired by 6PM. Feel a little nauseous after eating but I haven't gotten sick.

Items you should buy before starting chemo - Taxotere and Cytoxan for Breast Cancer

Before you start chemo treatment for breast cancer I would recommend purchasing the following items:

1. Water - Be sure to drink a lot of water the day before, of and after your treatment. For my first 2 treatments I made a point to drink a gallon a day and my side effects were minimal. I slacked on the third treatment and it seems to me like my body noticed the difference. I will be sure to do it again for my last treatment.

2. Lotion - My hands were very dry after I started doing chemo. They got so bad that I actually went out and purchased vaseline and used it on my hands. The dryness only lasted a few days and then my skin started itching.

3. Dr. Katz Therabreath Oral Rinse - Chemo kills the fast growing cells in your body, which includes the cells in your mouth. This can cause infection or sores in your mouth. If you rinse your mouth out a couple of times a day with this rinse it will help prevent you from any mouth sores. I started using it after getting a sore on my tongue that was very painful. After using it for a couple of days the sore went away and I have not had any trouble since. If you can not find this exact mouth rinse I am sure you can use any rinse that is alcohol free.

4. Anti-Nausea Medication - My doctor gave me a prescription for 100 pills and I after 45 days of treatment I have only needed to use one. I never actually got sick to my stomach. I am only recommending anti-nausea medication because I have heard that some people do get sick and I know I felt better just knowing I had something to help should I need it. I still carry it in my purse and will continue to do so until I am done with treatment.

5. Constipation Medication - You will probably get constipated during the first week of treatment. Be sure to have something around just in case you do.

6.Prilosec - Or any other heartburn medication. After my second treatment I had such terrible acid-reflux that I couldn't sleep laying down. I would wake up with a sore throat because of all the acid in my stomach. I started taking Prilosec the day before my treatment and have not had a problem since.

7. Hair Catcher for the Shower - These can be found for just over a dollar at Walmart. Having one of these over your bathtub drain will save you from having to call a plumber.

8. Wig - If you are planning to wear a wig after your hair falls out then you will need to get one within the first two weeks of treatment. Don't believe your friends who will tell you that you might get lucky and your hair might not fall out....or that they have a friend of a friend who's hair only got thin. I repeat, don't believe them! Your hair will fall out! It will get so thin that you will have a large bald spot on your head. You can see how my head looked before and after I shaved it. If I were to do this over I would shave my head on the 14th day even though that is when it just started falling out. It is unbelievable how much hair I found in my clothes and sheets and on the carpet.

9. Head Beanie - I was amazed at what a bald head feels like. It feels like what your head feels like when you just get out of the shower, cold and wet. Not very comfortable when you are trying to sleep at night. I had a beanie and it helped me tremendously.

10. Hats or Head Covers - I personally did not want to wear a wig all the time and I fell in love with wearing hats and head covers.

11. Lemonade - Some drinks start tasting funny after chemo but I have noticed that lemonade tastes good.

12. Neosporin - This will come in handy when your nose gets so dry it hurts. The inside of my nose got so dry that it cracked and the neosporin helped heal it quickly.

13. Tissues - Taxotere messes with your sinuses so be sure to keep some tissues in your purse or pocket at all times. My nose would start running without any warning.

Side Effects from my Second Cycle of Taxotere and Cytoxan

I have finished my 2nd cycle of chemotherapy for breast cancer. The chemo drugs I was given were Taxotere and Cytoxan. You can see my side effects from the first cycle here. This time I started a day early because my blood tests came back so well (and my doctor had they do off when I was originally suppose to give blood).

The doctor lowered my dose by 10% for my second round, which could be why I really didn't have very many side effects this time. But just for your reference I have listed them for you.

The side effects I've had have been so minimal that I am so glad that I decided to have the chemo. The worst thing that happened was my hair falling out. But I've got a couple of cute wigs and getting ready in the morning is so much easier now. My advice to anyone starting these two chemo drugs would be that you should shave your head as soon as your hair starts coming out. And be sure to have it done professionally otherwise you might risk getting razor bump or ingrown hair on your scalp like I did. It is very painful! If you do happen to get razor bumps you can buy stuff to get rid of them at target. The price range is $4.00 - $8.00 and is very worth it!

I will document my results from the 3rd round of chemo as soon as it is done. Today was my first day and so far I feel good. The doctor gave me the same dosage as last time so I am not expecting anything different.

I started chemo treatment for breast cancer on March 20, 2009. The chemo drugs they gave me were Taxotere and Cytoxan. You can read about my first day here. This treatment is done once every three weeks. I have documented the side effects from each day for your reference. If you are undecided about whether or not to do chemo, I hope this will help you.

Day 1:    Full of Energy, Hiccups at night before bed, lasted about 45 minutes.

Day 2:    Woke Up Full of Energy, Sleepy by 8 PM, but feel good otherwise.

Day 3:    Feel good, head a little foggy

Day 4:    Woke up feeling good, energetic, head a little foggy, feeling tired as day goes on.

Day 5:    Very tired. Food doesn't have much flavor.

Day 6:    Tired. Achy Body, Food doesn't have much flavor.

Day 7:    Stomach pains after eating, itchy scalp, itchy back, stomach/back pain at night

Day 8:    Stomach pain after eating - but not as bad as yesterday, itchy scalp, itchy back

Day 9:    Feel Good

Day 10:  Feel Good, started getting sore on tongue. Feels like when you eat too much sugar.

Day 11:  Feel Good, tongue still sore. Bought Dr. Katz TheraBreath Oral Rinse & started using 3 times a day

Day 12:  Feel Good but woke up with mouth/jaw pain - like I'm wearing a retainer, hair starting to come out?
               Tongue feels better.

Day 13:  Feel Good, Woke up with mouth/jaw pain again, I'm pretty sure I'm losing more hair than usual.
               Tongue sore gone.

Day 14:  Feel Good, Hair comes out when I brush it.

Day 15:  Feel Good, Hair comes out when I wash it. Received a Nuepogen shot today because of low white
               blood cell count

Day 16:  Feel OK, throat started hurting in the afternoon, possibly from the shot. Temp of 99.9, Hair is very thin now.

Day 17:  Very tired, sore throat, high temp of 101.9, low temp of 99.0 all day. Hair coming out a LOT. Cut it shoulder
                length.

Day 18:  Temperature back to normal but now have a cough. Looks like I got a minor cold. Hair even thinner today.

Day 19:  Still coughing but don't feel too bad. Hair falling out without help of a hand or brush

Day 20:  Coughing but feel OK. Hair is soooooo thin. I'm starting to feel self-conscious about it.

Day 21: Coughing but feel OK. The part in my hair is larger than normal. I have a bald spot in the top back of my head.

Please remember that everyone reacts differently and these side effects may not happen to you. Also, you may have side effects that I have not had. You can read about all the side effects for these drugs from my earlier post.

I start my second round of chemo tomorrow if my blood counts are good. I will keep track of those side effects, too. I have heard that the side effects could be different with each cycle. I am doing four cycles and will update my blog with side effects after each round.

Day Eight: Taxotere and Cytoxan Chemo Treatment - My Personal Journal

It was one week ago today that I had my first chemo treatment of Cytoxan and Taxotere. I must say that this week has been a lot easier than I expected it to be. I have not had many side effects this week. As of today I feel normal. I am sure this must be dangerous for me, because chemo lowers your immune system. At least when I was feeling tired I would constantly be washing my hands so I wouldn't get sick. Now that I feel good it is easy for me to forget to purell my hands after touching door handles or shaking someones hand.

Todays side effects have been very minimal. I continue to have an itchy back and scalp. As the day goes on I notice my body starts to ache more and more. Last night it was very difficult to sleep. I was in a lot of pain and found it hard to lay still. The pain was in my back and stomach area. I was very happy to find the pain completely gone when I woke up this morning. Right now it is early evening and I can feel the pain in my back coming on. I have a softball game tonight at 9pm and am trying to rest so I can play.

Another thing I have noticed is that I have quite an appetite. I am eating very well and often. My normal calorie range is 1650 and this week I have gone over that amount frequently. The strange thing about this is that even though I am overeating I am losing weight. These cells that are dying from the chemo must be very fattening cells!! I My goal weight is 125 pounds so I will be happy if I lose another couple of pounds. I am just afraid of losing so much weight that I start looking sickly.

One thing that could be a factor in the lack of side effects and the weight lose is the fact that I have been drinking so much water. I had read that some people were getting dehydrated and constipated from Cytoxan and Taxotere, and the steriods they make you take. I have not had a problem with dehydration or constipation. But I have been drinking a gallon of water every day. The first day it is hard to drink so much water. It makes you have to urinate so frequently. But if you drink that much every day you will notice that you don't go quite as often. And you will not need laxatives if you just drink enough water on a daily basis. Just be sure not to drink the whole gallon at one time. Drinking so much water at once is dangerous and could be hazardous to your health.

The complete cycle of the Cytoxan and Taxotere treatment is 21 days. It takes that long for the body to repair itself from drugs. Since I am having such minimal side effects I will stop updating you daily, but at the end of the 21st day I will update with a post showing day-by-day side effects. I am very interested to see if and when I lose my hair. I have read that it usually starts falling out by day 13. Maybe I won't lose my hair since my other side effects are so small. Wishful thinking? I'm not real worried about it, I've got a wig ready to go.

Day Seven: Taxotere and Cytoxan Chemo Treatment - My Personal Journal

It has been seven days since I was given a chemo treatment of Taxotere and Cytoxan. I chose to do chemo, even though the doctors told me that it would only decrease my chances of the cancer returning by one or two percent. You can read about my decision here.
I am documenting my side effects on a daily basis in hopes that it will help others in their own decision on whether or not to do chemo.

Today I woke up feeling like a normal person. There were several times today that I actually forgot that I am on chemo. I was full of energy and felt very well. I have noticed my back and my scalp has been very itchy today. Also, every time I eat I feel small stomach pains. It almost feels like I had done a thousand sit-ups the night before. The fast-growing cells that line the intestines and stomach are among those killed off by chemotherapy drugs, which is why so many chemo patients experience nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. I feel lucky that I haven't had any nausea or vomiting.

Today I woke up feeling good. I became very tired while trying to get ready for work. I seem to do alright as long as I can sit and rest often. My body aches like I've been hit with a baseball bat, but not to the point where I am bent over in pain.

I have not lost my appetite but I have noticed a slight change in taste of some food and drinks. Soda does not taste good to me anymore.

Today marks my fifth day of being under chemo treatment for breast cancer. I am documenting my side effects on a daily basis in order to help others out there who may need to go through this and are curious as to what may happen to them. Please remember that chemo side effects can be more or less severe to some people. Some people are given stronger dosages and some are given less. The chemo drugs I was given was Taxotere and Cytoxan.

Although I slept alright last night I found it harder to get out of bed this morning. I woke up to my alarm clock and hit the snooze button about 3 times before I finally got out of bed. I felt very good. The fogginess that had been in my head the days before was gone. It wasn't until i was getting out of the shower that I started feeling very tired. I felt very weak, so as I got ready for work I made sure to sit and rest a lot.

I was able to work a full day, although I mostly sit at a desk all day. I don't know if I would be able to work if I had to stand on my feet all day. I felt very tired for most of the day. It felt as though I had been up all night and didn't get any sleep. I have decided to sleep in tomorrow and just wake up naturally.

I have noticed that food doesn't taste very good to me today. Everything has tasted very bland. I still have an appetite and will continue to eat, but the flavor in food is nonexistent for me today.

I received my first chemo treatment of Taxotere and Cytoxan on Friday. I have not felt sick from it yet. I have done the research of these drugs and I know that I will be feeling sick soon, so when I woke up feeling good this morning I decided to get up and go to work. I was able to work the entire day, although I have felt more tired than usual. Also, I am continuing to have this foggy feeling in my head. I am not sure how to describe it. When I have a conversation with someone I feel a bit detached, but I am still able to participate in the conversation. It just seems weird.

Yesterday was my first chemo treatment of Taxotere and Cytoxan. I went to bed about midnight last night and felt alright. I did have the hiccups for about 45 minutes before I fell asleep. I woke up to urinate about 3 or 4 times last night. I think that is just because I have been drinking so much water so I don't get dehydrated. I fell right back asleep each time I got back into bed. I woke up at 7:30 AM this morning and I felt just fine.

I have not had any side effects today. It is 8 PM as I write this and I do feel very tired. I believe it is because I did not get much sleep last night. My face and chest is a little flushed, but I feel normal.

Day One: Taxotere and Cytoxan Chemo Treatment - My Personal Journal

Today was my first day of chemo treatment for Breast Cancer. I have decided to create a daily journal of my side effects in order to help other people who will be going through this or are deciding whether or not they should do chemo. Because my Onco Type DX score was 20, I did not have to do the chemo. You can see my explanation here as to why I decided to go ahead with the treatment.

My appointment was for 8:40 AM. They called me in at 9:00 AM and took my blood pressure, weight and temperature. After that they directed me to a room where quite a few people were sitting in chairs. I was told to sit in an empty chair the corner of the room. The nurse put an IV in my hand and connected it to a bag of saline. Then she gave me a glass of water and and two steriod pills. After I took the pills she told me that she was going to hook up a small bag of Decadron.

What Decadron Is Used For:

As an anti-inflammatory medication. Decadron relieves inflammation in various parts of the body. It is used specifically to decrease swelling (edema), associated with tumors of the spine and brain, and to treat eye inflammation.
To treat or prevent allergic reactions.
As treatment of certain kinds of autoimmune diseases, skin conditions, asthma and other lung conditions.
As treatment for a variety of cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
To treat nausea and vomiting associated with some chemotherapy drugs.
Used to stimulate appetite in cancer patients with severe appetite problems.
Also used to replace steroids in conditions of adrenal insufficiency (low production of needed steroids produced by the adrenal glands).

After the bag of decadron was emptied she told me that I would have to wait a half hour to make sure I don't have a reaction to it. I though it was funny that it could be possible that I would have a reaction to a drug that was being given to me to prevent me from having a reaction to another drug. But luckily I had no reaction to any of them.

The second bag the connected to my IV was Cytoxan. The side effects are as follows:

Low blood counts. Your white and red blood cells and platelets may temporarily decrease. This can put you at increased risk for infection, anemia and/or bleeding.
Hair loss. Temporary - usually begins 3-6 weeks after the start of therapy. Hair will grow back after treatment is completed although the color and/or texture may be different.
Nausea and vomiting, more common with larger doses, usually beginning 6-10 hours after therapy.
Poor appetite
Discoloration of the skin or nails (see skin reactions).

While the Cytoxan bag was still dripping a nurse came by and offered me a drink and a snack. I took a cranberry/raspberry juice box and some oreo cookies.

As soon as that was done they connected the Taxotere. These are the side effects:

Low white blood cell count (this can increase your risk for infection)
Low red blood cell count (anemia)
Fluid retention with weight gain, swelling of the ankles or abdominal area.
Peripheral neuropathy (numbness in your fingers and toes) may occur with repeated doses.
Nausea
Diarrhea
Mouth sores
Hair loss
Fatigue and weakness
Infection
Nail changes (color changes to your fingernails or toenails may occur. In extreme, but rare, cases nails may fall off. After you have finished treatments, your nails will generally grow back.)

They normally use the Taxotere first, but since this was my first time they wanted to do it last in case I had any side effects. The nurse told me that most people get sinus symptons from Taxotere. I asked her how soon they get the reaction and she told me that some people get it while still connected to the IV. Luckily I did not have any sinus problems today.

After the Taxotere bag was empty the nurse flushed my system with the Saline. That just means that she speed up the drip. When that bag was finished she took out the IV and told asked me if Ihad any questions. I asked her if I could live my life as normal and eat as I normally do. She told me that I should eat now while I feel good because soon I will be too quesy and sick to eat. She also told me to stay away from sick people because my immune system would be lowered. She also told me to avoid physical contact with other people (like hugging or shaking hands) as much as possible and that I should wash my hands often. She also warned me to flush the toilet twice everytime I use the restroom so that I could be sure to flush all the chemicals.

The entire chemo process took 3 1/2 hours. The time went by very fast. The chairs recline and are comfortable.

After the treatment I went out to lunch and had some soup and a soda. Before and after my treatment I have be drinking a lot of water, because I have heard that chemo can make you very dehydrated.

It has been seven and a half hours since I finished my treatment and I feel good and energetic. I am having some symptons of acid reflux, but that is nothing new for me. I have a softball game in an hour and have decided to go ahead and play. I just won't be going out for pizza and beer after the game, like I usually do.

Oncotype DX Test Results - Score of 20 & My decision on whether to do chemo

Today I received the results from my Oncotype DX test. Before I get into my results I will try to explain exactly what this test is. The Oncotype DX test is done on the cancerous tumor that is removed during surgery. It tests 21 different genes and the resutls gives a recurrence score. The higher the score, the more likely the cancer is to return within 10 years of the first diagnosis. A score of 10 or less means that you definately do not need chemo. A score of 25 or above means that you definately do need chemo.

It was just my luck that the doctor should tell me that my score was a 20. The doctor said that I fall into that 'grey area', where they are not sure if chemotherapy is needed or not. He told me that the option to do chemo was up to me.

The odds of the breast cancer returning, either in my breast or anywhere else was 12%. Radiation and hormone therapy would lower the odds down to 6 percent. If I choose to do chemotherapy it would only lower the odds by another 1%-2%.

Why would I want to do chemo if it only lowered my chance of recurrance by only 1 or 2 percent? I suppose because a one or two percent chance could mean the difference between life and death. The doctor told me the chemo drugs I would be given and the side effects I would have.

The first drug is Cytoxan. The side effects are as follows:

Low blood counts. Your white and red blood cells and platelets may temporarily decrease. This can put you at increased risk for infection, anemia and/or bleeding.
Hair loss. Temporary - usually begins 3-6 weeks after the start of therapy. Hair will grow back after treatment is completed although the color and/or texture may be different.
Nausea and vomiting, more common with larger doses, usually beginning 6-10 hours after therapy.
Poor appetite
Discoloration of the skin or nails (see skin reactions).

The second drug is Taxotere. These are the side effects:

Low white blood cell count (this can increase your risk for infection)
Low red blood cell count (anemia)
Fluid retention with weight gain, swelling of the ankles or abdominal area.
Peripheral neuropathy (numbness in your fingers and toes) may occur with repeated doses.
Nausea
Diarrhea
Mouth sores
Hair loss
Fatigue and weakness
Infection
Nail changes (color changes to your fingernails or toenails may occur. In extreme, but rare, cases nails may fall off. After you have finished treatments, your nails will generally grow back.)

The side effects make chemotherapy sound very scary. Escpecially when it would only lower my odds of the cancer returning by 1%-2%.

I asked the doctor why I should consider chemotherapy. He told me that even though they did the lumpectomy and the tumor came out with clear margins (they got all the cancer from the tumor) and the cancer did not spread to my lymph nodes it still could have spread through my blood stream. He told me that it could be in my lungs or somewhere else right now and could eventually grow and spread. He said that the chemo should kill these cells, where ever they may be in my body. I say 'should', because it is not guaranteed. This is why my chances of the cancer returning would still be about 4%-5%.

The doctor also said that since I am only 37 years old I should consider doing chemotherapy. I felt hopeful when he told me that I still had a good 48 years left in me and the chemo would help to acheive living into my 80's. He went on to state that he wouldn't recommend chemo to someone with the same results as me if they were in their 70's. He said the one or two percent wouldn't be worth it to them because the chemo could cause unrepairable damage to an older body.

After he gave me all of the facts I knew it was time to make my decision.

One thought came to my mind when I was trying to decide if I would should agree to the chemo treatment. What if I refused the treatment and the cancer returned in two years? How would I feel about my decision then? Of course I would greatly regret it.

And what if I agreed to do the chemo and the cancer still returned in two years? At least I would know that I did everything I could to fight it.

As much as I don't like the thought of losing my hair, I would much rather be alive and bald then dead with perfect hair!

I start my first chemo treatment on March 20th.

Breast Cancer Consultation after Surgery

Today I met with my Oncologist. My surgeon wanted me to talk with him in case I needed chemotherapy. Since my appointment with him was scheduled before my appointment with the surgeon, he gave me the results of my surgery.

He told me that they took three cysts from my breast and that one of them was malignant (cancer). He also told me they took one lymph node and that the cancer had not spread there. He went on to tell me that I would need radiation and that they were running a test named 'Oncotype DX' to see if I needed chemotherapy. He told me that all of my other tests came back with great results so this final test probably would, too. The Oncotype DX test is done on the tumor that is removed during surgery. It tests 21 different genes and the resutls gives a recurrence score. The higher the score, the more likely the cancer is to return within 10 years of the first diagnosis.

I get my results on March 5th.

MY DAY OF HAVING A LUMPECTOMY FOR BREAST CANCER

If you have been following this blog you know that I discovered a lump in my breast last month. Twelve days later I was told I had breast cancer and 22 days after that I finally had the surgery. Here is the story of my surgery:

I was told the night before that I had to be at the hospital at 6:30 in the morning. My surgery wasn’t scheduled until 12:30 in the afternoon and I asked the nurse who called me if I heard her correctly. “Yes, you will need to come in at 6:30 in the morning because they have tests to do before your surgery”, she said.

I woke up at 4:20 in the morning on February, Friday the 13th and got ready for a long day. I arrived at my Mom’s house at 5:45 AM and we got on the road. We made it to the hospital and the surgery center ten minutes early. There was no one in the waiting room and no employees were working at the desk. After waiting a few minutes two women came out and checked me in. One of them walked us back into room number 14. I was told to strip down to nothing and put on a medical gown. The gown was really just a piece of cloth with some buttons on it. I was thankful my Mom was there to help me figure out how to put it on. Between the two of us it still took about 5 minutes to figure it out!

The nurse handed me a small cup and asked me to give them a urine sample. Per doctors orders I hadn’t had anything to eat or drink since 9 PM the night before so I wasn’t sure if I could give them a sample. I took the cup into the bathroom and was able to provide a small amount for them. When the nurse came in she saw the cup and said she had one test to do before they could do anything else. I asked what test that was and she said it was a pregnancy test. She explained that they test every woman from ages 12 to 55 before they do any type of surgery. My test came out negative so the nurse told me to lie in the bed and wait.

One of my sisters arrived at 8 AM while we were still waiting for something to happen. Shortly after that the doctor came in and put his initials on my right breast. He said they do that as a precaution so that the correct breast is operated on. At 9 AM a gentleman came in and told me he would be taking me in for a test. He told my Mom and sister that they could come along or wait there for me. They decided to go with me. The gentleman wheeled my bed down several hallways, down a ramp and into an elevator. When we came out of the elevator I said “I don’t even know where I am”, and he told me we were in the basement. I looked up and saw a sign that read ‘Nuclear Medicine’.

I was greeted by a doctor who told me he would be injecting my areola with some radiation. He told my family that they could stay and watch or go on the other side of the curtain and wait. They opted to stay and watch. My Mom told me that I could hold her hand and I laughingly told her that she is the one afraid of needles, not me. I held her hand so that she would feel better. As the doctor stuck the needle under my skin I heard my sister say to my Mom, “You can’t even watch someone else get a shot”? It touched me that she wanted to give me her hand in support when I knew how difficult it was for her to be there.

The needle going into my skin did not hurt at all. It wasn’t painful until he injected the radiation into my breast. The pain lasted for only about 5 seconds. After it was over the doctor covered the spot with a band aid and told me to massage the breast by placing my fingers over the band aid and making a circular motion to the left three times, and then three times to the right. He explained that this would help the radiation reach my lymph nodes. The purpose of this was so that the doctor would be able to easily find my lymph nodes and could tell if the cancer had spread there.

After the injection I was taken back to my room. It wasn’t long after that when a nurse came in and hooked me up to an IV. At 9:30 AM my other sister and niece came to visit me. The hospital rules stated that there are only two visitors allowed at a time in the pre-surgery room but no one complained that I had four.

We waited around for another three long hours before the anesthesiologist came in to ask me some questions. He asked me if I was allergic to anything, or if any of my family members had ever had any problems with anesthesia. I answered ‘No’ to all of his questions. He explained the process of anesthesia with me. He told me that he would start by giving me something to relax me before they took me into the operating room. I secretly thought that he should give my family the drug because they all seemed more nervous than me. He then told me that they would take me to the operating room where I would hear the doctors and nurses discussing my case. They would then put an oxygen mask on me and ask me to breath for about 2 minutes. At that point they would ask me to count down starting at 100. He told me I would be out after only counting one or two numbers. In reality I was out before they even asked me to count.

After the anesthesiologist explained everything he told me they would come and get me very soon. He left and about 5 minutes later another anesthesiologist and nurse came in and asked me the same questions and gave me the same information as before. After his explanation a couple more people came in and told me it was time. They put some valium in my IV and it took effect immediately. I was instantly relaxed. My family gave me hugs and kisses and told me they loved me. I was finally on my way.

I was wheeled into the operating room and there were people all around me. I looked around the room and was surprised because it seemed cluttered with things. I remember thinking that it didn’t fit my image of what an operating room should look like. I brushed it off as too many years of watching Grey/s Anatomy.

Next, a mask was placed over my mouth and someone told me to take deep breaths. The mask wasn’t tight against my mouth and nothing was holding it in place. Every once and a while someone would press the mask against me to make it tight and they would tell me to keep breathing deep. I did as they said and kept watching everything around me. There were people moving around me but I couldn’t tell what they were all doing. Someone was strapping my arms down straight across, like Jesus on the cross. I remember thinking that I should be panicking over the fact that I was being tied down, but I wasn’t. The valium must have made me ok with that.

The next thing I recall is someone waking me up. I was upset with them, telling them “hey, I was at a blackjack table!” I heard someone laugh and say they’ve never heard that one before. They told me I did very good. I asked them if I had a draining tube attached to me, and they told me I didn’t. I asked them how many lymph nodes they took out and someone told me ‘one, but the doctor will tell you all of this’.

I was then wheeled into the recovery room. I thought I was awake the whole time and was only in the recovery room for about 20 minutes but I was told I was in there for almost two hours. There was a nurse next to me and I asked her if the doctor was going to come and talk to me. She told me that he would talk to my family. Then suddenly the doctor appeared and I smiled and said “ohhhhhh, there he is!”

He asked how I was doing and I said “great”. He told me that the cancer was very tiny. He made a face as he said the word tiny, like he was amazed at how small it really was. I asked him if he got it all and he told me he believes he did, He said the cancer was so small it took him some time to find it. He told me that I wouldn’t remember this conversation and that my family would tell me everything later. Then he walked away.

The nurse put a number one sign on my bed, which meant I was the next in line to go back to my room. When no one came to get me she told me that she would take me herself. I apologized to her for that. She told me it was no problem, the bed I was on was like a Mercedes Benz. She said it drove itself. She then told me that this one bed alone cost ten thousand dollars.

It was a short trip from the recovery room to my room. After I was placed in my room the nurse went and got my family. They all came back with presents for me. I felt so happy and loved. They told me what the doctor said. He told them that what I was feeling in my breast was a cyst and that there were three of them in my breast. He said that the cancer was lying against one of the cysts and that it was very tiny. He made the same face to them as he had to me when explaining how small it was.

A nurse came in and brought me a small glass of ice water and shortly after that she gave me the smallest juice box I had ever seen. I drank them both and it was very refreshing. Next, someone came in and took out the IV needle that was in my hand. Then the nurse came back and told me that I could get dressed and that she was getting my discharge papers together. When she gave me my discharge papers she told me I could walk to my car or I could get a wheelchair. I opted for the wheelchair because I felt very dizzy while I was getting into my clothes.

The drive home was uneventful and I was not feeling any pain. I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that my Mom made for me and we sat on the couch watching TV. I was not in any pain but only felt a little discomfort. I decided to take a vicodin before I went to bed in case I had any pain in the middle of the night. Unfortunately the pill kept me awake half the night, but at least I was not in pain.

It has been 4 days since the surgery and I have not had any pain. I did not take any pain pills after that first night and I have not had any limitations as to what I can do.

I took the bandages off after two days and was surprised at the size of the scar on my breast. It is two inches long. The scar in my armpit is only one inch. I don’t mind the scars, I’d rather have them than breast cancer!

I see the doctor on Thursday to get the results of my surgery.

Two Ways To Slow Growth of Breast Cancer

My surgery was scheduled 34 days after the lump I discovered I turned out to be breast cancer. The thought of waiting so long scared me tremendously. I was afraid that the cancer would spread before the surgery date arrived. Because of this fear I decided to see if I could find ways to slow the growth of breast cancer. I was able to find two and started using the results on myself as though I was a human guinea pig. I still have 10 days before my surgery and will let you know how it goes. In the meantime, here are my findings:

Research has shown that the nighttime hormone Melatonin slows cancer growth by 70%.

David E. Blask, MD, PhD, of Bassett Research Institute in Cooperstown, N.Y., reported the findings at the 2003 annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. His research team tested it on mice implanted with human breast cancers.

Breast cancers get revved up by a kind of dietary fat called linoleic acid. Melatonin interacts with linoleic acid, so he gave melatonin to mice implanted with human breast cancers.

"This breast cancer rev-up mechanism gets revved down by melatonin," Blask said at a news conference. "Nighttime melatonin is a relevant anticancer signal to human breast cancers. Ninety percent of human breast cancers have specific receptors for this signal."

Blask's team exposed lab mice with human breast cancers to constant light. Tumor growth skyrocketed.

"With constant light, tumors grow seven times faster and soak up incredible amounts of linoleic acid," he says. "During the day, the cancer cells are awake and linoleic acid stimulates their growth. But at night cancer cells go to sleep. When we turn on lights at night for a long time, we suppress melatonin and revert back to the daytime condition."

Walnuts Slow Growth Of Breast Cancer Tumors

Research has found evidence that a daily dose of walnuts - equal to two servings a day in humans - reduces the growth of breast cancer tumors in mice. The study is the first to investigate the effect of walnut consumption on cancer.

In the study, researchers looked at the ability of walnuts to slow the growth of breast tumors using an amount comparable to what humans might eat.

A group of 22 mice with human breast cancer tumors was divided into two groups. One group was fed ground walnuts daily in the amount equivalent to two ounces (28 walnut halves) for humans. The comparison group consumed a diet supplemented with corn oil, along with amounts of vitamins, minerals and fiber that were similar to the amounts occurring in the walnut diet.

After 35 days, the breast cancer tumors of the walnut-fed mice were only about half the size of the tumors in the mice that were not fed walnuts. The time it took the tumor to double in size was 11.1 days for the corn oil fed mice compared to 23.3 days in the walnut fed group.

That would make it 22 days after I was told I have cancer and 34 days after I discovered the lump. I just wonder how much damage it can do in that amount of time. What scares me the most is the possibility that it could spread to my lymph nodes during that time.

My Dad was told he had cancer and 26 days later he passed away. My Mom, on the other hand, was told she had two lumps in her breast. One was benign (non-cancer) and one was malignant (cancer). She had to wait 2 weeks for the surgery and the doctors took out the wrong lump. Then we had to wait another 2 weeks and they removed the correct lump, but a week later they told us that they did not remove enough.....so we had to wait another 2 weeks for them to go in and do the surgery a third time. The third surgery took care of all the cancer and she had to do five weeks of radiation. She does not drive the freeway so she drove to the hospital everyday and a shuttle took her to LA for her radiation. She was so strong during the whole ordeal. I was and am very proud of her. I only hope that I can be as strong.
